The Person

Saryu Roy is a well known name in socio-political field in Jharkhand and Bihar. His political carrier was shaped during J P lead famous students movement of Bihar in 1974. He was active in this movement as a member of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarhi Parishad. He was a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. He served the party in various capacities in Organization as well as in Legislatures of Bihar and Jharkhand. He was a Member of Bihar Legislative Council from July 1998 to July 2004 and Member of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from February 2005 to October 2009.He was the Deputy Chairman of the Jharkhand State Planning Board for a brief while in between.

He lost the 2009 assembly seat by a narrow margin of around 3000 votes. He got re-elected to the Jharkhand legislative assembly in December 2014 from 49, Jamshedpur-West constituency by defeating the congress party candidate by a margin of over 10,000 votes. Subsequently he was nominated cabinet minister in the Jharkhand state government in February 2015 as a minister of parliamentary affairs, food public distribution and consumer affairs Department. He later on relinquished the portfolio of Parliamentary Affair Minister in January 2018 due to some unavoidable circumstances. He also contested the assembly election but this time as an independent candidate against the erstwhile chief minister Raghubar Das. He won the election as an independent candidate by an impressive margin of around 16 thousand votes with Raghubar das. It is for the first time that a sitting chief minister was defeated by an independent candidate who was a member of his cabinet.

He also worked as an accredited freelance journalist with Patna edition of reputed daily The Nav Bharat Times besides contributing news items, columns and articles to various news papers and magazines of regional and national standing. He also edited a farm magazine named Krishi Bihar to support and propagate the farmer's movement of Sone Command Area in Bihar.

He is widely acclaimed Environmental activist. His concern for Environment Protection, Pollution Control, Conservation of Water Bodies and other Natural Resources in Jharkhand is well recognized. He has undertaken the arduous task to make Damodar, Swarnarekha and Sone rivers free from industrial pollution. He travelled through length and breadth of these rivers to assess the quality and availability of its waters and suggest remedies for its improvement. He is a votary of corruption free politics and clean administration.

He is credited with raising several issues of corrupt practices at helms of affairs in political administration and launching well documented anti corruption campaigns resulting into punishment to corrupt politicians and officials. His struggle against corruption and pollution is gathering momentum and support day by day from all corners of society. Despite opposition from the vested interests and resistance from a section close to seat of power.
